The April/May issue of The National Wildlife Federation Magazine will have my image of a grizzly bear cub as their back cover image!
The image was slated to be the front cover. But the final decision went with images relating to the coverage of the anniversary of oil spill in LA. Another feature story in that issue is about Yellowstone which is why the grizzly bear cub almost made the cover.
This image was made the first week of May last year in Yellowstone. A ranger mentioned that these cubs (there was one other cub with the Sow) were probably 2 weeks out of the den. The cub was about the size of a loaf of bread...so small, so fragile, so resilient, so beautiful! I hope they survived their first year! This cub was very blonde on its head and shoulders with white around it neck and the other cub was dark brown all over with the white around its neck. I look forward to getting out to Yellowstone in May. It is a magical place and my favorite place to be!
If anyone is interested here is link to other Yellowstone images from that same week. There are more images of the cubs in the link.

Black Wolf, Yellowstone, near Sough Creek, May 2011.
"Like neither saviors nor infidels but simply (or not so simply) like wolves, they returned to their home, bringing great color and breathing a life-force that some, in an upside-down world, view as destructive—as if we have become so estranged that we can no longer really tell one from the other. In this regard, the wolves are instructors, and in this regard, we are watching them with fascination, with our senses as well as our returning knowledge... —re-engaged and keenly alert."-Rick Bass, from Wolf Palette
