Black Wolf, Yellowstone, near Sough Creek, May 2011.
"Like neither saviors nor infidels but simply (or not so simply) like wolves, they returned to their home, bringing great color and breathing a life-force that some, in an upside-down world, view as destructive—as if we have become so estranged that we can no longer really tell one from the other. In this regard, the wolves are instructors, and in this regard, we are watching them with fascination, with our senses as well as our returning knowledge... —re-engaged and keenly alert."

I spent my birthday last week looking for black bear and I found them!

I was hiking around in Desolation Wilderness and saw 5 different black bears, not bad for a 3 day trip! My favorite sighting was this black bear cub in a tree. I was hiking (by myself) at sunrise when a pine cone dropped and almost landed on me. I look up expecting a squirrel or raven and two black bear cubs are looking down at me in the tree. I was so excited and elated but then I had the "oh shit" moment... "where's mom?" I walked further down the trail 'cause I did not want to be between the sow & her cubs and then I broke out the 500mm from my pack and got a few shots of the cub(s) peering over the pine needles. The cubs were just going to town feeding on the pine cones stopping to nap a little. The 500mm is a little hefty for hiking but its moments like these that I just won't leave home without it!

It was a pretty great way to spend my birthday unplugged, in the mountains, lots of trees and of course with bears!

  1. Trish, I saw the bear silhouette at your main page and thought, I'll bet there are some awesome bear photos in the blog. You didn't disappoint. :) Wow, what a stunning shot! This could be one of the best black bear photos I've seen, especially given the uncommon context and the personality you managed to capture.
